Find out the meaning behind Halloween’s colored pumpkins

Oct 29, 2025, 10:44 AM | Updated: Oct 30, 2025, 10:49 am

While orange pumpkins remain the traditional symbol of Halloween, a growing number of households are displaying pumpkins in a variety of colors—each representing a cause or message. These colored pumpkins are part of a broader movement to raise awareness about important issues! Here are the meanings behind some of the pumpkin colors you’ll see while out trick-or-treating this year:

  • Teal pumpkin buckets signal that a child has a food allergy. It might also signal to trick-or-treaters that the homeowner has other non-food treats or toys that are safe for all children.
  • Purple pumpkins are linked with the “Purple Pumpkin Project,” aimed to help spread awareness of epilepsy.
  • Blue pumpkins or blue pumpkin buckets are used as a sign that a child may have autism or a sensory processing disorder.
  • White gourds outside a home may signify pregnancy and infant loss.
  • Pink pumpkins are displayed to raise awareness for breast cancer.
