Stories Worth Telling Festival brings films, panels and actual human connection to Golden this weekend

Oct 14, 2026, 9:26 AM

If your weekend plans currently involve doom-scrolling, pretending to hike or paying $19 for a cocktail that tastes like a candle, Golden has a better idea.

The Stories Worth Telling Festival returns Friday, Oct. 16, through Sunday, Oct. 18, in downtown Golden, bringing a full weekend of documentary, adventure and human-centered films to the American Mountaineering Center, 710 10th St. The Colorado-based nonprofit festival is built around four core values — compassion, innovation, adventure and community — which is a nice change from the usual film festival values of “standing in lines” and “quietly judging tote bags.”

The festival’s 2026 lineup includes 20 films, plus community events, filmmaker panels and family-friendly programming in partnership with the Foothills Art Center. All-access passes are $100, and individual program tickets start at $12. Tickets are available through the official Stories Worth Telling Eventive page.

Films with a pulse

This year’s schedule leans into the kind of storytelling the festival is known for: real people, real stakes and just enough outdoor grit to remind you that Colorado is still legally required to include adventure in everything.

Friday’s programming includes features and short film blocks, with opening highlights such as “Cheyenne,” which follows women on the rodeo circuit. The day also includes curated midday and evening short programs for those who like their inspiration in manageable servings.

Saturday brings a packed slate of features and community selections, including “FORWARD,” a film centered on an adaptive sports movement, and “Listen,” one of the festival’s community picks. The day’s programming also includes a mix of human-interest films, giving audiences plenty of chances to laugh, cry and later claim they “just had allergies.”

Sunday closes out the festival with more adventure-driven selections, including “Winner Gets Cake,” along with the closing feature “Jail Time Records,” which profiles a recording studio inside an African prison. Subtle? No. Potentially fascinating? Absolutely.

Panels, art and reasons to leave the house

The festival is not just a sit-in-the-dark-and-eat-snacks situation, though that remains a perfectly noble pursuit. Free community programming will also take place throughout the weekend in partnership with the Foothills Art Center.

On Saturday, Oct. 17, families can take part in “Kids Create with Jesse Crock” at the Astor House. The hands-on art class is open to all ages, which means adults can finally stop pretending they are “just helping” and admit they also want to make something with their hands.

The festival also includes several panel discussions, including “Through Her Lens,” “Beyond the Screen” filmmaker panels and a session with National Geographic photographer Tommy Joyce. These conversations are designed to bring audiences closer to the people behind the work, because apparently movies do not just appear fully formed from a hard drive in someone’s backpack. Who knew?

A very Golden kind of weekend

Golden is a fitting home for the festival. The town has long balanced outdoorsy ambition with small-town charm, plus just enough brewery proximity to make post-screening conversations dangerously confident. The American Mountaineering Center also gives the festival a natural base camp feel, which is appropriate for a weekend full of films about pushing limits, building community and not spending three straight days on the couch “recovering.”

The Stories Worth Telling Festival has carved out a space for films that do more than fill a schedule. Its programming focuses on stories that are personal, socially aware and often rooted in exploration, whether that means climbing, creating, surviving, adapting or simply being brave enough to listen.

And yes, that may sound earnest. But every once in a while, earnest is good. Especially when it comes with good films, thoughtful conversations and a reason to spend a fall weekend in Golden.
