Spirit Airlines has officially ceased operations … what does that mean for ticketed passengers?

May 4, 2026, 8:26 AM

Travelers looking for low-cost fares are facing a major shift today. Spirit Airlines has officially ceased operations after failing to secure a last-minute bailout deal, effectively bringing an end to the carrier’s long-standing era of budget travel.

The sudden closure leaves thousands of passengers nationwide, including those across the Front Range, scrambling to make new arrangements.

“We know how much your travel plans matter, especially as we head into a busy time of year,” says the team here at KOSI 101.1. “If you have a trip booked with Spirit, please don’t panic—take a breath, check your email for cancellation notices, and look into your options for rebooking or seeking a refund through your credit card issuer.”

For those currently away from home, the Department of Transportation typically mandates that other airlines offer “distressed passenger” fares to help stranded travelers get to their destinations.

Spirit has not yet provided a clear timeline for potential customer refunds. As this situation develops, we are here to support our Denver community. Stay tuned to KOSI 101.1 as we continue to track this story and provide the resources you need to get home safely.
