Southwest Airlines ends free checked bags policy 🙁
Southwest Airlines will start charging some customers for checked bags, ending its unique free policy in an effort to boost earnings. The airline’s “bags fly free” policy, allowing customers to check in two bags at no cost, will change on May 28.
The move comes as Southwest aims to increase its operating margin to at least 10% in 2027. The new policy will offer free checked bags to loyal customers with the highest status and those who pay premium fares, while others will be charged for their first and second checked bags.
The changes follow pressure from activist investor Elliott Investment Management and mark a departure from Southwest’s long-standing customer-friendly policies.
So “Bag’s Don’t Fly Free” is their new tagline? This is getting so ridiculous and out of control!
(Not that I have money to travel anyway but still loved the dream of it being an option)
