CDOT misspells ‘California’ on downtown Denver street sign

Denver has a lot going on downtown. Construction, traffic, the occasional Citi Scooter blocking an entire lane — and now, apparently, a spelling lesson that nobody asked for.
A street marking near 19th Street in downtown Denver is turning heads for all the wrong reasons. The Colorado Department of Transportation, or one of its contractors, managed to misspell “California” on a street sign — a street that has, for the record, been named California for quite some time. The sign was put up saying “Califorina” and folks noticed.
The error, painted directly onto the street surface, was spotted by locals who probably did a double-take before pulling out their phones. Because in 2026, if you witness something absurd in public, you document it. That’s just the rule.
It’s worth noting that California is not a short word, but it’s also not that complicated. It’s not like they were trying to spell Alameda or Speer. It’s California. As in the state. The big one on the West Coast. The one everyone’s heard of.
To be fair, these crews are often working in the dark, early morning hours, under pressure, in traffic — so human error is absolutely a thing. But still. Someone, at some point, looked at that fresh street sign and signed off on it.
The 19th Street corridor in downtown Denver is a well-traveled stretch, running through the heart of the city and connecting commuters, light rail riders and everyone just trying to get to their overpriced downtown parking garage. California Street itself cuts through a busy section of the urban grid, which means a lot of eyeballs have had the opportunity to see this mistake up close.
To the city’s credit, these kinds of errors — while embarrassing — do get corrected. Eventually. After enough people post about it. And after someone official enough decides to make a phone call.
Road and signage errors happen more than you’d think across the country. Cities have painted arrows pointing the wrong direction, misspelled basic words on crosswalks and thrown up signs with the wrong street names entirely. Denver is in good, if not slightly clumsy, company.
As of this morning, the sign was taken down.
