Roxborough State Park Shuts Down on Easter Sunday – Thanks, Bear Creek Fire

Apr 6, 2026, 7:24 AM | Updated: 7:27 am

Well, if you were planning an Easter egg hunt amid the red rock formations of Roxborough State Park, you may have had to pivot to your backyard. The park slammed its gates shut on Sunday, April 5, 2026 – yes, that’s Easter Sunday – all because of some smoky drama from the nearby Bear Creek Fire.

According to officials the closure kicked in that morning after they spotted a slow-moving, 10-acre wildfire blazing in Pike National Forest. This pesky blaze, dubbed the Bear Creek Fire, is burning about two miles northwest of the Indian Creek campground. No word yet on what sparked it – maybe a rogue campfire or Mother Nature’s latest plot twist – but it’s pumping out enough smoke and fire danger to make the whole area a no-go zone.

The impact? The front gate is locked up tighter than a miser’s wallet, and any lingering visitors were politely (we assume) asked to skedaddle due to the heavy smoke. It’s a bummer for hikers, picnickers, and anyone hoping for a scenic stroll, but hey, better safe than singed.

Park officials haven’t shared a reopening timeline yet, in the meantime, maybe use this as an excuse to binge-watch nature documentaries from the safety of your couch. Stay safe out there, folks – and remember, wildfires don’t take holidays.
