The concept of soulmates isn’t exactly new. In ancient Greece, the philosopher Plato introduced the idea of “soulmates” in his work “The Symposium,” describing how humans were originally created as whole beings but were split into two by the gods, and we spend our lives searching for our other half. So basically, thousands of years of romantic anxiety — you’re welcome, humanity.

Do People Actually Believe in Soulmates?

Spoiler: yes, most of them do. A survey by One Poll reveals that 73% of people believe in soulmates — so the hopeless romantics are definitely winning the vote. And according to YouGov, 60% of U.S. respondents believe in the idea of soulmates, with women being slightly more likely to endorse the notion (64%) compared to men (55%).

Interestingly, if you live in the South, you’re particularly likely to believe in soulmates. Nearly two-thirds (64%) of U.S. adults living in the South believe in soulmates, along with 57% of Northeast residents and exactly half (50%) of those who live in the Midwest or the West.

And if you’re already coupled up? Adults who live with a partner (66%) and adults who are in a civil partnership (66%) are more likely to believe in a soulmate than those who are divorced (52%) or married (59%). Make of that what you will.

So… Have You Found Yours?

81% of married couples believe they are with their soulmate — which is sweet. But hold on, because one in five Americans currently in a relationship says their partner is not their soulmate. Yikes. Pass the wine.

And 25% of people believe there is a soulmate for everyone (Cosmo), while a sobering 30% of people have given up on finding a soulmate altogether. Honestly, 30% of people? Bold. Relatable. But bold.

When it comes to timing, a survey by Jewelers Mutual Insurance reveals that the average man knows after just seven months of dating whether his partner is his soulmate. Meanwhile, a survey by Match.com reveals that women tend to find their soulmate at age 25, while men find theirs at age 28.

The Search Is Real (and Sometimes a Little Painful)

Not everyone finds it easy. According to a survey by Lotto Plus, 41% of people have found themselves in a relationship with someone other than their soulmate, and 16% of those people stayed because they were worried they wouldn’t find love again. If that hits close to home, you’re definitely not alone.

And here’s one that stings: 16% of people have lost the phone number of someone they believe could have been their soulmate (The Sun). In 2026. With every social media platform imaginable at our fingertips. Somewhere, someone is really kicking themselves right now.

Oh, and men — this one’s for you. 20% of men blame their receding hairline on their failure to find their soulmate (Private Clinic of Harley Street). Which is… a choice of perspective, but sure.

Singles Are Still Hopeful

53% of single women and 52% of single men say they’d like to find their soulmate so they can get married. And the digital age isn’t slowing that search down — 86% of online daters believe they can meet their soulmate online (datewithamate.com). Many more men (42%) and women (37%) agreed or strongly agreed that “people can find their soulmates” on a dating app. So swipe away, romantics. Science (sort of) supports you.

Don’t Sleep on Your Pet Soulmate

Now, here’s where things get really good. According to Darwin’s Natural Pet Products, 68% of people describe their dog as their emotional twin, and 56% consider them their soulmate. A survey by Zesty Paws backs that up, finding that 53% of people say their pet is their soulmate. And One Poll found that 63% of pet owners say their pet is their soulmate.

While some might see National Soulmate Day as a chance to connect with their romantic partners, others use it as an opportunity to give love to their other “soulmates” — be it friends, family, or pets. Because love isn’t just a romance thing, right?

Honestly? A dog who’s happy to see you every single time you walk in the door, never forgets your birthday (because every day is your birthday to them), and asks for nothing but belly rubs and snacks? That tracks.
