Hollywood Walk of Fame grants star to ‘South Park’ creators

“South Park” creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker may have had their humble beginnings in the Colorado towns of Littleton and Conifer, respectively, but their names will soon be etched in the ground among the stars of Los Angeles.
On Monday, June 24, the Hollywood Walk of Fame announced its class of 2025 during a press conference. Included on the list of 36 were greats such as Emilio Estevez, Jane Fonda, George Strait, David Beckham and the Centennial State’s own Stone and Parker in the television category.
Those honorees are determined by the Walk of Fame Selection Panel of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. According to the Hollywood Walk of Fame website, the panel chose from hundreds of nominations and made their selections on June 14.
The categories are motion pictures, television, recording, live theatre/live performance, radio and sports entertainment.
The pair’s connections with Colorado are plentiful, including the origin of their creative partnership, which can be traced back to the University of Colorado Boulder. The fellow Buffs met during a film class in 1992 and bonded over their love of Monty Python. The titular town of the animated sitcom born from the friendship, “South Park,” is based on South Park basin, located about 60 miles southwest of Denver and home to Fairplay, Colorado. The show made its debut in 1997 and will continue its reign through at least 2027.
“South Park” isn’t their only famous project tied to Colorado, however.
Due to COVID-19, Casa Bonita, a restaurant erected in 1974, thought by many to be a landmark of the state, closed temporarily. The staple then filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April of 2021, making its demise seem imminent to locals.
Not all was lost for the Lakewood restaurant when in September of the same year, Parker and Stone committed to salvaging the the restaurant by purchasing it for $3.1 million. As if that weren’t enough, the duo poured another $40 million into renovations. The new iteration of the icon reopened in May of 2023. A documentary entitled “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” captured the project and was shown at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year.
The date for the acceptance ceremony for their star has not yet been determined, but recipients have two years from the selection date to decide. The star ceremonies are typically announced ten days prior to the dedication.
