FDA announces Whole Foods guacamole recall at highest level

The FDA just gave this Salmonella recall its most serious classification — and nearly 13,000 units are in play across 13 states.
Put down the chips. Seriously.
If you picked up any guacamole, salsa or dip from Whole Foods Market recently, the FDA would very much like you to stop eating it. What started as a voluntary recall announcement on Aug. 12, 2026, has since been upgraded to a Class I recall — the FDA’s highest risk classification, reserved for situations where there’s a reasonable probability the product will cause serious health consequences or death.
So, not great.
Whole Foods Market pulled select salsas, guacamoles, pico de gallos, and prepared foods after the products were linked to potential Salmonella contamination traced back to jalapeño peppers. That’s not just a Whole Foods problem, either — this is part of a broader multistate Salmonella jalapeño outbreak that the FDA has been investigating, and it has also triggered a separate recall from Taylor Fresh Foods for salsas and pico de gallo sold at other retailers, including Target.
As of now, the outbreak has sickened 431 people. That’s not a rounding error. That’s a lot of people who thought they were making responsible snack choices.
Nearly 13,000 units are affected across 13 states, and the recalled products carry best-by dates ranging from Aug. 7 to Aug. 14, 2026. Yes, those dates have passed — but the FDA specifically flagged that consumers may still have these sitting in their freezers. So go check.
The affected products include:
- Whole Foods Mild Guacamole Dip
- Whole Foods Mild Guacamole Dip No Tomatoes
- Whole Foods Spicy Guacamole Dip (with and without tomatoes)
- Whole Foods Medium Pico de Gallo Guacamole Dip
- Whole Foods Pomegranate Guacamole Dip
- Whole Foods Roasted Corn Guacamole Dip
- Whole Foods Trio Dip (Pico de Gallo, Guacamole, and Salsa)
- Whole Foods Heirloom Tomato Salsa
- Whole Foods Mango Pineapple Salsa (also sold as a condiment in the Caribbean Mango Pineapple Turkey Burger)
The recall also extends into Canada for cross-border distribution, because apparently no one is safe.
The guidance here is refreshingly simple: don’t eat it. Throw it out or bring it back to Whole Foods for a full refund. No receipt? Doesn’t matter. They’ll take it back.

A Class I FDA recall isn’t the agency being dramatic. It means they’ve assessed the risk and determined this is serious enough to warrant their loudest alarm bell. Salmonella is no joke — symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, and it can be genuinely dangerous for young children, elderly individuals, pregnant people, and anyone with a compromised immune system.
Do yourself a favor. Check your fridge, check your freezer, and make your guacamole from scratch for a while. Your avocados won’t betray you like this.
Colorado, for the record, is not one of the states falling under the recall.
