Forget the run for the roses: The Weenie Derby is where it’s at

Move over, thoroughbreds. While everyone else is obsessing over fancy hats and high-stakes gambling at Churchill Downs, a much more important—and significantly cuter—event just went down at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park.
The annual Weenie Derby brought out more than 60 dachshunds, all ready to waddle their hearts out. If you’ve never seen a pack of long-bodied pups racing toward a finish line, let me tell you, it’s the kind of high-octane drama my life needs. Forget the mint juleps; I’ll take 60 vibrating hot dogs on paws any day of the week.
And the best part? It’s all for a good cause. The event raised plenty of scratch for the Kentucky Humane Society and youth sports scholarships. My own two little girls would’ve lost their minds watching these guys zip around, and honestly, I might have to drag them to next year’s race.
Planning is already underway for another round of racing, so mark your calendars if you need a dose of wholesome chaos. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to bet my bottom dollar on a pup named “Frankie.”
Next year let’s make doggie hats?!
