Dick’s Sporting Goods brought Its Biggest Store Concept to Colorado

If you’ve ever stood in a sporting goods store staring at a rack of baseball bats wishing you could just, you know, hit something — today is your day.

Dick’s Sporting Goods officially opens its first Colorado House of Sport location in Thornton TODAY, bringing what the company calls an “immersive sports shopping experience” to the northern Denver suburb. The store, located at 16401 Washington St. near the Interstate 25 and Colorado Highway 7 interchange, spans approximately 100,000 square feet — which, for context, is roughly the size of two football fields dedicated entirely to sporting goods and the activities that go with them.

Colorado is officially on the House of Sport map, and they are not being subtle about it.

What Actually Makes This Different

Look, we’ve all been in a Dick’s. You walk in, you find the shoes, you debate whether you really need another pair of running shorts, and you leave. House of Sport is a different animal.

The Thornton location features a climbing wall, because apparently browsing gear wasn’t adventurous enough on its own. There are also golf bays equipped with TrackMan simulators, giving you the ability to embarrass yourself with data-backed precision. And then there’s the multi-sport cage, which supports baseball, softball, lacrosse, and soccer — letting customers actually test equipment and track their performance metrics before buying.

The whole concept is built around the idea that you should be able to try before you buy, and honestly, it makes a lot of sense. Nothing like swinging a bat in a fluorescent-lit store to know whether it’s the right one.

The Star Power They’re Bringing In This Weekend

Dick’s isn’t exactly playing it low-key on the opening weekend, either.

Friday morning, Denver Broncos Hall of Fame running back Terrell Davis will cut the ribbon at 8:45 a.m. A legitimate football legend opening a sporting goods store — not a bad way to kick things off.

Come Saturday, Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II will be on hand for a meet-and-greet from noon to 1:30 p.m. If you’ve watched PS2 lock down receivers you know this is worth showing up for.

And then Sunday, Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar closes out the weekend from noon to 1:30 p.m. At this point, Dick’s is basically running a sporting event with some retail attached to it, and we’re here for it.

Opening festivities run Friday through Sunday, so there’s plenty of time to catch at least one of the appearances — or just go use the climbing wall.

Why Thornton Makes Sense

The Washington Street location near I-25 and Highway 7 puts the store in a sweet spot for a massive chunk of the northern Front Range population. Between Thornton, Westminster, Brighton, and everyone cutting down from Fort Collins and Loveland, the traffic draw is real. And with a store this size offering this kind of experience, Dick’s is clearly betting people will make the trip.

For a region that’s absolutely obsessed with outdoor recreation, golf, youth sports leagues, and pretty much every athletic pursuit known to humankind, dropping a 100,000-square-foot interactive sporting goods store in the middle of the metro area seems like less of a gamble and more of an inevitability.

House of Sport isn’t just a bigger Dick’s — it’s a genuinely different kind of retail experience built around letting athletes and weekend warriors actually engage with the products they’re buying. For Colorado, where “I’m really into [insert sport here]” is basically a personality trait, this concept fits like a well-broken-in glove.
