Colorado’s miller moth season is weirdly quiet this year

Miller moth season should be underway in Colorado, but this year, the dusty little flyers have been pretty hard to find.

Normally, miller moths make their way west across Colorado’s Front Range in late spring, traveling from the eastern plains to the mountains. Peak moth season usually lasts about five to six weeks, starting sometime between mid-May and early June. The “moths in your house” part usually only lasts a couple of weeks.

This year, though, we’re seeing fewer of them. The dry winter and ongoing drought conditions likely pushed them through faster. Miller moths are not big fans of hot, dry weather.

And while I fully admit I used to suck them up in the vacuum, I have since learned the error of my ways. These little guys are actually really important.

Miller moths are pollinators, just like butterflies, which means they help plants reproduce. They are also a major food source for birds and bears, making them an important part of Colorado’s ecosystem.

The good news? Migrating miller moths are not harmful. They do not lay eggs in your house, they do not eat your furniture and they are mostly just confused by your lights.

If they are bugging you, turn off porch lights and outdoor lights early in the evening.

So, yes, they may be dusty and a little chaotic, but they matter. Save the moths!
