Colorado’s leaf peeping season brings more enforcement and a new Breckenridge shuttle

Sep 4, 2026, 2:29 PM

Colorado’s favorite fall show is almost here, and this year, it may arrive a little earlier than usual.

Because of our hot, dry summer, leaf peeping season could start as early as Sept. 11 in some areas. The downside? The color may not stick around as long as we’d like, so if you’re planning a mountain drive, now is a good time to start making those plans.

Just don’t let the excitement turn into a safety issue. We all love a gorgeous golden aspen moment, but officials are reminding drivers to slow down, be patient and park only where it is allowed.

On Guanella Pass, enforcement will be increased again this year after a bigger push last fall to ticket people illegally parking along the road. Translation: If it’s not a parking spot, don’t make it one.

Breckenridge is also trying something new for one of its most popular fall spots. The parking lot at the Wakefield Trailhead for Aspen Alley will be closed entirely during peak season. Instead, a shuttle will run daily from Sept. 12 to Oct. 3 from the parking lot at Stephen C. West Ice Arena. The shuttle will operate from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

So grab your sweater, charge your phone, pack some snacks and enjoy the colors – safely. Colorado fall is beautiful, but it’s even better when everyone gets home happy!
