Colorado gets a late-August lunar eclipse

Aug 19, 2026, 12:25 PM

Colorado, go ahead and mark your calendar for a little moon magic!

A lunar eclipse is expected to be visible here the night of Thursday, Aug. 27, into the early morning hours of Friday, Aug. 28. That’s when the full moon passes through Earth’s shadow and can take on that dramatic, spooky red glow people often call a “blood moon.”

And the best part? You do not need special glasses. Lunar eclipses are safe to watch with your own eyes, so you can simply step outside, look up and enjoy the show.

For Colorado and the rest of the Mountain time zone, the eclipse maximum is expected around 10:12 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27. That should be the best time to see the moon at its most dramatic.

While all of North America will be in the viewing zone, the eastern half of the U.S. is expected to get the boldest view. Still, if our Colorado skies cooperate, we should have a beautiful look at it from right here at home.

My advice? Make it a cozy little moon moment. Grab a blanket, step away from bright city lights if you can, and maybe take a mug of tea or cocoa outside. If you’re in Denver, even heading to a darker backyard, balcony or open space can help. Just be sure to check local park hours if you’re planning a late-night viewing spot.

And yes, because I love all things astrology, I will absolutely be treating this full moon eclipse like a cosmic reset button. Science gives us the shadow. The universe gives us the vibe!
