America’s Favorite Breakfast Cereals by State: Froot Loops, We See You

Look, we all have strong opinions about cereal. It’s basically a personality trait at this point. So when researchers actually sat down and mapped out America’s favorite breakfast cereals by state, you just knew it was going to be both fascinating and a little controversial.
The research team at Concordia University, St. Paul, based in Minnesota, set out to discover the most popular type of cereal in every U.S. state. The data was based on Google Trends results taken from every U.S. state and Washington, D.C., between January 2025 and January 2026. The results? A colorful (literally) snapshot of what this country reaches for before 8 a.m.
The Reigning Champ: Froot Loops
Toucan Sam is out here absolutely dominating the country, and honestly, fair enough.
Americans love the multi-colored, ring-shaped Froot Loops, with the cereal being the most popular in 13 states: Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas and Virginia. That’s a lot of states all agreeing on something for once. Thirteen states, one cereal. We’re choosing to take this as a sign that the country isn’t completely divided.
Rice Krispies: The Quiet Overachiever
No mascot drama. No neon colors. Just Snap, Crackle, Pop doing the most — and that’s low-key impressive.
Kellogg’s Rice Krispies came in second place, as it was the most popular cereal in five states: Idaho, Montana, South Dakota, Utah and Wisconsin. The great plains and mountain states have chosen simplicity, and we respect that.
Cheerios: For the People Who Like to Feel Responsible
Nothing says “I’m an adult who makes good choices” like a bowl of Cheerios. Except, of course, for all that sugar in Honey Nut Cheerios — but we don’t talk about that.
General Mills’ Cheerios was also the most popular in five states: Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont. The Northeast has spoken, and it is wholesome.
Trix: Because Some States Just Like to Be Different
The fruit-shaped Trix from General Mills was the most popular in Washington, D.C., Kansas, Massachusetts and Washington. Trix is for kids — and apparently also for the nation’s capital. No comment.
Cocoa Puffs: Going Nuts in Paradise
The chocolate-flavored treat Cocoa Puffs was found to be the fan-favorite in Hawaii and Nevada. Hawaii and Nevada — two states where the vibes are totally different but the taste in cereal is apparently identical. If you’re eating Cocoa Puffs in Hawaii while watching the sunrise over the Pacific, honestly, you’re winning at life.
Other States Doing Their Own Thing
Not every state fell in line with the big hitters, and we love the chaos of it.
Cinnamon Toast Crunch was in the most demand in Delaware, Maryland and South Carolina. The mid-Atlantic region has cinnamon in its soul, apparently.
And then there are the real wildcards. In Maine, the most searched-for cereal was Raisin Bran, while in Wyoming, it was Frosted Mini Wheats. Minnesota was the only state where Wheaties came out on top, while Mississippi was the sole state flying the flag for Apple Jacks. Maine choosing Raisin Bran is very on-brand for Maine. No further notes.
The Bottom of the Bowl
Whether your state is riding with Froot Loops or going rogue with Raisin Bran, cereal remains a deeply American institution. Sweet cereals remain a favorite, with many states opting for brightly packaged sugary options over healthier alternatives. Shocking, we know.
So the next time someone judges you for your cereal choice, just point them to the map. You’ve got at least a few states backing you up — and sometimes, that’s all the validation you need.
Now go eat your breakfast.
