Inconceivable!

A “Princess Bride” musical that has been the subject of talks at Disney Theatrical Productions since 2013 now has its writers and a composer, according to Broadway.com.

What we know: David Yazbek (“Tootsie”) will be the composer and lyricist for the “Princess Bride” musical, and he will be joined by writers Bob Martin (“The Prom”) and Rick Elice (“The Cher Show”), according to Broadway.

  • The musical will be based on both the “Princess Bride” novel written by William Goldman in 1973 and the 1987 film adaptation starring Robin Wright and Cary Elwes, according to ComicBook.com.

Disney Theatrical announced plans to develop the novel and film into a musical back in 2013, according to Broadway.com.

  • At the time, Disney Theatrical president and producer Thomas Schumacher said of the project, “‘The Princess Bride’ has proven to be an enduring delight and a beloved favorite to multiple generations … what William Goldman created is first and foremost a celebration of storytelling; what better place to spin that tale than on the stage?”
  • According to Broadway, composer Adam Guettel was reportedly involved in the production of a new adaptation in 2005, but ultimately announced in 2012 he would not be involved.
  • There has been no word on why the project was shelved for so long.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3CIXEAjcc8

“The Princess Bride” follows Buttercup, a woman who falls in love with a farm boy named Westley but later learns he’s been killed and agrees to marry suitor Prince Humperdinck. The story gets wilder from there.

No release date has been announced yet for the release of the musical adaptation.
