Colorado Is One Of The States Where You’re Most Likely To Get A Speeding Ticket

Congratulations, Colorado drivers. We did it. We cracked the top 10.
According to a new survey by the Simmrin Law Group, Colorado ranks No. 9 among the places where drivers are most likely to have speeding tickets. The survey looked at the percentage of drivers with at least one speeding ticket, and Colorado came in at 9.86%.
So, nearly 1 in 10 Colorado drivers has been busted for speeding. Shocking, I know. Who could have predicted that in a state where half the population is late for skiing, late for work or trapped behind someone doing 47 mph in the left lane on I-25?
States Where Drivers Are Most Likely To Have Speeding Tickets
Here are the top places where drivers are most likely to have a speeding ticket, according to the Simmrin Law Group survey:
- North Dakota — 14.76%
- Iowa — 10.88%
- Washington, D.C. — 10.87%
- Virginia — 10.26%
- Ohio — 9.95%
- Idaho — 9.91%
- South Carolina — 9.90%
- South Dakota — 9.89%
- Colorado — 9.86%
- Utah — 9.66%
Yes, Washington, D.C., is on the list even though it is not a state. We’re all just going to move past that because traffic rankings love chaos.
Why Colorado Made The List
Colorado landing at No. 9 probably will not surprise anyone who drives here regularly. Between mountain roads, wide-open stretches of highway and the daily demolition derby that is metro Denver traffic, there are plenty of opportunities to have a little too much confidence in your right foot.
There’s also the classic Colorado driving combo: fast-moving commuters, unpredictable weather, steep grades and tourists who suddenly realize their rental car is not emotionally prepared for Floyd Hill.
And let’s be honest, some stretches of road almost feel designed to test your self-control. I-70 heading west? U.S. 36 between Denver and Boulder? E-470 when it’s empty? They whisper, “You could absolutely make up five minutes here.” Then a trooper appears, because of course.
North Dakota Takes The Top Spot
North Dakota ranked No. 1, with 14.76% of drivers having a speeding ticket. That is a sizable lead over every other state on the list.
Iowa came in second at 10.88%, with Washington, D.C., right behind at 10.87%. Colorado’s 9.86% puts it just below South Dakota and just ahead of Utah.
So at least we beat Utah, which is what really matters.
Slow Down, Colorado
Speeding tickets are expensive, annoying and terrible for your insurance rates. Plus, Colorado roads are already spicy enough without everyone pretending they’re qualifying for the Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb on the way to Costco.
So if you’re driving in Colorado, maybe ease up a little. Especially on I-25.
Actually, especially everywhere
