10 Things in most homes that are dirtier than a Toilet Seat

Jul 28, 2026, 8:31 AM | Updated: 9:49 am

You scrub your toilet like it’s a part-time job. You’ve got the gloves, the brush, maybe even a little checklist on the bathroom wall. Meanwhile, the rest of your house is quietly becoming a petri dish — and you have absolutely no idea.

According to a recent article by the New York Post, the dirtiest things in your home aren’t where you think they are. In fact, your toilet seat — the thing everyone loves to panic about — doesn’t even make the list. Congrats to your toilet, honestly. It deserves some recognition.

So what’s actually crawling with bacteria, mold and enough germs to make a microbiologist cry? Glad you asked.

1. Dish Sponge or Rag

This one hurts because it’s supposed to be cleaning things. Your kitchen sponge is widely considered the single most germ-infested object in the average home, harboring millions of bacteria per square inch. You’re essentially wiping your dishes with a warm, moist apartment complex for microbes. Toss it or sanitize it regularly — and yes, regularly means more than once a year.

2. Kitchen Sink

Speaking of the kitchen, that sink you rinse your raw chicken in? It’s a bacterial playground. E. coli, salmonella and a whole roster of uninvited guests tend to set up shop in your drain and on the basin itself. The toilet, by comparison, is practically a spa. Let that sink in — pun absolutely intended.

3. Toothbrush Holder

You put your toothbrush in there to stay clean. Adorable. Toothbrush holders rank among the top three germiest items in most homes, collecting toothpaste residue, standing water and all kinds of microscopic nonsense. Give it a wash. Like, today.

4. Pet Bowl

Your dog stares at you with those big, unconditional love eyes — and then goes and licks a bowl that hasn’t been properly washed in longer than you’d like to admit. Pet bowls can harbor yeast, mold and bacteria that are bad for your furry friend and, yes, potentially for you too. Wash it like you’d wash your own dishes. Because you should.

5. Coffee Reservoir

Good morning! Your coffee maker’s water reservoir is likely growing mold and yeast right now as you read this, completely undisturbed. Most people never clean it. The warm, dark, moist environment is basically a five-star resort for bacteria. Run a cleaning cycle with white vinegar. You’ll thank yourself later — after the horror subsides.

6. Bathroom Faucet Handle

Everyone washes their hands after using the bathroom. But think about what you touched right before you washed them when you reached for that faucet handle. Yeah. The bathroom faucet handle is one of the highest-traffic, least-cleaned surfaces in your home. Wipe it down.

7. Pet Toy

That squeaky hamburger your dog has been dragging around the house for eight months? It’s disgusting. Pet toys accumulate saliva, dirt and bacteria at an impressive rate. If it’s fabric, throw it in the wash. If it’s rubber or plastic, scrub it. If it’s disintegrating into 47 pieces on your floor, maybe it’s time to just buy a new one.

8. Countertop

Your kitchen countertop sees raw meat, dirty produce, your work bag, your kid’s backpack and probably your phone — which is its own biohazard situation. Despite looking clean, countertops can carry dangerous bacteria long after you think you’ve wiped them down. Use an actual disinfecting cleaner, not just a damp cloth you grabbed off the handle of your oven.

9. Stove Knobs

Nobody cleans stove knobs. Nobody. They get touched constantly — with hands that have been handling raw food, wiping faces and doing all sorts of things — and they almost never get removed and actually scrubbed. Take them off. Wash them. Try not to think too hard about what comes off.

10. Cutting Board

Cutting boards, especially plastic ones, can harbor more bacteria than a toilet seat after just a few uses. All those tiny knife grooves become little hideouts for salmonella and E. coli. Use separate boards for meat and produce, sanitize them properly and replace them when they start looking like a topographical map.

The Bottom Line

Your toilet isn’t the enemy. It never was. The real threats are the everyday items you touch, use and forget about — the ones that feel too ordinary to clean but are working overtime to make you sick.

So next time you’re deep-cleaning the bathroom out of habit, maybe take a lap through the kitchen first. Your microbiome will thank you.
