5K On The Runway coming to DIA

Because apparently the concourse walk wasn’t enough cardio for you

If you’ve ever sprinted through Denver International Airport desperately trying to catch a connecting flight to wherever, you already know the place is massive. Now, someone has gone and made that an official sport.

Denver International Airport is hosting a 5K race on its actual runway this September, giving runners the rare opportunity to pound pavement on one of the longest commercial runways in the country — no boarding pass required.

What’s the Deal?

The DEN 5K on the Runway is exactly what it sounds like. Participants get access to the airfield — a space that, on any normal day, would absolutely get you arrested — and run a certified 5K route across the tarmac. The backdrop? Those iconic blue Rockies sitting pretty to the west and the tent-peaked terminal that somehow never gets old.

It’s one of the more unique road races you’ll find in Colorado, which is saying something in a state that will build a race course up the side of a 14er if given half a chance.

What You Need to Know

  • Location: Denver International Airport, 8500 Peña Blvd., Denver, CO 80249
  • When: September 12th 2026 (check DEN’s official site for the confirmed date)
  • Registration: Available through the airport’s events page and third-party race registration platforms
  • All ages and fitness levels are welcome — this is a flat course, which in Denver terms practically counts as a rest day

Why This Race Actually Slaps

Look, Denver has no shortage of 5Ks. There’s one practically every weekend from May through October. But how many of them let you run where a Boeing 737 was parked six hours earlier? Exactly zero. That novelty alone makes this worth lacing up for.

Plus, DEN sits at roughly 5,400 feet above sea level, so your out-of-town friends can have a built-in excuse ready before they even cross the start line.

The event typically draws a mix of serious runners, airport employees, aviation nerds, and people who just thought it sounded cool — which is an honestly great crowd.

Before You Sign Up

Registration spots are known to fill up, so dragging your feet isn’t advised. Check flydenver.com for the most current registration info, pricing and any updated event details, since specifics can shift closer to race day.

For Denver locals, this is a solid excuse to finally do something with that September Saturday that doesn’t involve a patio happy hour. Well, you can still do the patio happy hour. Run first, though.
