Skip the Grab-and-Go: Study Ties Home Cooking to Lower Dementia Risk

Cooking at home might not feel like a big, life-changing habit — it’s mostly just you figuring out what to do with a pack of chicken before it turns on you — but a new study suggests it could be tied to a lower risk of dementia later in life.

Researchers reported in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health that people who cooked their own meals at least once a week had a 25% lower risk of developing dementia. The study followed 10,975 adults and found a similar pattern by sex: Men who cooked regularly had a 23% lower dementia risk, while women who cooked regularly had a 27% lower risk.

The researchers said dementia risk dropped as cooking frequency increased. They also found the benefits were especially strong for people with little cooking experience — meaning you don’t have to be a “foodie” to potentially get something out of it. The team concluded that helping older adults maintain an environment where they can keep cooking may matter for dementia prevention.

Why cooking might be connected to brain health

The study doesn’t prove cooking prevents dementia. It shows an association — a link — and other factors may be at play. Still, there are a few reasons cooking at home could track with better brain health:

  • Better diet quality. People who cook at home often eat more vegetables, fiber and nutrient-dense foods and fewer ultra-processed foods.
  • Less sodium and added sugar. Restaurant and grab-and-go meals tend to be heavier on both, which can hurt heart health over time — and what’s bad for the heart is often bad for the brain.
  • More routine and independence. Planning meals, shopping and cooking can support daily structure and self-sufficiency.
  • Mental and physical activity. Cooking uses memory, attention and coordination. It’s not a magic brain workout, but it’s more engaging than eating chips over the sink.

What else research generally points to

Even beyond this study, diet patterns tied to brain health — like the Mediterranean-style and MIND-style approaches — tend to line up with home cooking. Those patterns emphasize vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts, fish and healthy fats such as olive oil.

Meanwhile, growing research has linked higher ultra-processed food intake with worse health outcomes, including cognitive decline. Not every takeout meal is ultra-processed, obviously, but frequent grab-and-go eating can make it harder to avoid.

The practical takeaway (no chef’s hat required)

If you’re trying to stack the deck in your favor long-term, cooking at least once a week is a realistic start. It can be basic. It can be repetitive. It can be “sheet pan dinner for the fourth time.” The point is you’re cooking — not auditioning for a cooking show.
