Ditch the Lawn, Keep the Cash: Denver’s New Rebate Program

Mar 25, 2026, 9:10 AM | Updated: 9:32 am

If your weekend plans usually involve pushing a mower back and forth over a thirsty patch of Kentucky Bluegrass, I have some good news: Denver Water wants to pay you to stop.

We’re all trying to be a little greener here in the Mile High City, and nothing screams “wasteful” quite like keeping a lush, emerald-green lawn in the middle of our high-desert climate. That’s why Denver Water is offering rebates of up to $750 for homeowners who ditch their traditional grass in favor of “water-wise” landscaping.

I know, I know—the idea of ripping up your yard sounds like a massive headache. But between the rising cost of water and the constant battle against our dry Colorado summers, maybe it’s time to embrace the xeriscape life? We’re talking beautiful native plants, rock gardens, and ground covers that actually like living here. Plus, $750 is a pretty nice incentive to stop spending your Saturday mornings sweating behind a lawnmower.

Just remember, you have to apply before you start the project. Don’t go tearing up the front lawn today and expect a check in the mail tomorrow—that’s not how the paperwork gods work.

Check out the Denver Water website to see if your property qualifies. If you’re looking for me, I’ll be over here trying to figure out how to convince my HOA that rocks are the new grass.

Stay cool, Denver. And maybe trade that lawnmower for a good book this weekend. You’ve earned it.
