Friday the 13th: The Superstition, the Fear, and the Facts

Why does this infamous date still give us chills?

It’s Friday the 13th—and if you felt a small shiver reading that, you’re not alone. This notorious date has spooked humanity for over a century, inspiring horror franchises, workplace superstitions, and even a few phobias with nearly unpronounceable names.

The Master of Horror Is Terrified of It

Here’s an irony worth savoring: Stephen King, the man who gave us It, The Shining, and countless sleepless nights, is himself a friggatriskaidekaphobe—someone with an irrational fear of Friday the 13th. He’s also a triskaidekaphobe, meaning the number 13 alone unsettles him. Apparently, even the king of horror has his limits.

Where Did This Superstition Come From?

Friday the 13th is a collision of two ancient fears: the unluckiness of Fridays and the ominous reputation of the number 13. The superstition likely crystallized in the late 1800s, drawing from:

  • Norse mythology, where 13 guests at a dinner party led to chaos and death
  • The Knights Templar, who were arrested en masse on Friday, October 13, 1307, by order of King Philip IV of France
  • The Last Supper, where 13 diners gathered before the crucifixion—which tradition holds occurred on a Friday

A Dark Historical Footnote

Adding fuel to the legend: Jack the Ripper claimed his final known victim on Friday the 13th, 1888. Whether coincidence or not, it’s the kind of grim detail that keeps superstitions alive.

Can You Even Say the Fear’s Name?

The clinical term for fear of Friday the 13th is friggatriskaidekaphobia (named for Frigga, the Norse goddess associated with Friday). Prefer Greek? Try paraskevidekatriaphobia. Either way, good luck saying it three times fast.

It’s Not Unlucky Everywhere

Superstition is surprisingly regional:

Culture Unlucky Day
United States, UK Friday the 13th
Italy Friday the 17th
Spain, Latin America Tuesday the 13th

So if you’re feeling anxious today, a quick flight to Rome might cure what ails you.

The Silver Lining

Not everyone dreads the date. Many people consider Friday the 13th lucky—and statistically, good things happen on these days just as often as bad. Countless birthdays, weddings, and milestone moments have fallen on Friday the 13th without incident.

The bottom line? Friday the 13th is a fascinating blend of history, folklore, and human psychology. Whether you’re locking yourself indoors or leaning into the spooky vibes, at least you now have some trivia to share—and a new tongue-twister to practice.

Happy Friday the 13th. Stay safe out there… or don’t. It’s probably fine.
