Denver does not do small parades. The Denver St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the largest in the western United States, drawing an estimated 300,000 to 400,000 spectators each year. It is also one of the city’s longest-running volunteer traditions, celebrating Irish culture since the event was revived in its modern form in 1962.

The 2026 parade will take place Saturday, March 14, beginning at 9:30 a.m. in downtown Denver.

A brief history

Denver’s first St. Patrick’s Day parade dates to 1889. The event paused for several decades before being revived in 1962, when organizers established the modern version of the celebration. Since then, it has become a signature spring event for the city.

The green stripe tradition

One of the parade’s most recognizable traditions is the green stripe painted along the parade route on Blake Street. For the day, Blake Street is temporarily renamed “Tooley Street,” honoring a former Denver district attorney.

2026 route

The parade route runs from 19th and Wynkoop streets to 27th and Blake streets, passing through the LoDo area and nearby neighborhoods.

One of the largest in the West

The Denver St. Patrick’s Day Parade is often described as the largest St. Patrick’s Day parade west of the Mississippi River. The event features large crowds, a long parade route and dozens of entries.

Irish tradition with a Colorado twist

The parade highlights traditional Irish culture, including bagpipes, Irish dancers and cultural organizations. At the same time, it reflects Denver’s regional character, with horse-drawn wagons, community groups and international organizations participating in the celebration.

Parade honors

Each year the parade recognizes several ceremonial roles, including a grand marshal, Queen Colleen and the Little Shamrock.

Volunteer-driven event

The parade is organized and funded entirely by volunteers, making it one of Denver’s largest community-run events.

Weather is always a wildcard

March weather in Colorado can vary widely, but the parade traditionally proceeds rain, snow or sunshine. Attendees are encouraged to dress in layers and prepare for changing conditions.
