Heavy snow in the high country – hard freeze for Denver this week

Oct 28, 2024, 4:30 PM

The National Weather Service in Boulder has issued a Winter Weather Advisory effective from 6 p.m. Monday until noon Wednesday for several mountain ranges, including the San Juan, Elkhead, Grand Mesa, Battlement Mesa, and Park Mountains. Snowfall in these areas could reach up to 11 inches, with some locations possibly seeing even more.

Travel conditions are expected to be slick and dangerous, particularly on roads, bridges, and overpasses. The National Weather Service warns that travel may be very challenging, if not impossible. These hazardous conditions could affect commutes on Tuesday morning and evening, as well as Wednesday morning.

The central and southern mountains of Colorado are likely to receive the highest snowfall totals, ranging from 10 to 13 inches.

Our partners at 9NEWS say a cold front is anticipated to arrive in Denver on Tuesday afternoon, bringing increased winds and cloud cover. A light mix of slushy snow and rain may occur during the Wednesday morning commute in the Denver area.

In the metro region, snow accumulation is expected to be minimal, with only about an inch or two of slushy snow on colder surfaces in the southern and western Front Range foothills.

Temperatures in Denver could plummet by 50 degrees from Sunday to Wednesday due to this cold front, with a high of 44 degrees forecasted for Wednesday.
