When does daylight saving time end in 2024? What you need to know.

Daylight saving time will end for the year at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, Nov. 3, when we “fall back” and gain an extra hour of sleep.

Next year, it will begin again on Sunday, March 9, 2025.

Not every state and U.S. territory takes part in daylight saving time. Hawaii and the majority of Arizona do not observe this practice. Due to its desert climate, Arizona opts out of daylight-saving time, except for the Navajo Nation. When most of the U.S. embraced the Uniform Time Act, Arizona decided there was no compelling reason to change the clocks to push sunset an hour later during the hottest months.

When can we stop the changing of the time twice each year?

The Sunshine Protection Act, a federal bill initially proposed by Republican Florida legislators Sen. Marco Rubio and Rep. Vern Buchanan in 2018, has yet to be approved by Congress despite numerous efforts.

Congress is the only one that can change the observance period for daylight saving time. Since 2015, at least 45 states proposed bills to change their observance of DST, according to the Congressional Research Service.

In Colorado, the General Assembly passed legislation in 2022 that would set Colorado’s clocks to daylight saving time year-round. Gov. Jared Polis (D) signed it, but the law can only take effect if: A federal law was enacted that allows states to remain on daylight saving time year-round.
