NBC brings the Olympic ceremony to IMAX

July will bring the world’s best athletes to the big screen, so to speak.

NBC announced Friday that over 150 IMAX screens across the country will broadcast the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics live. The games will be held in Paris, France, and will begin on July 26 and run through August 11.

This year’s Olympics will look slightly different this time around, for many reasons.

Four new sports will have their trial run at Paris’ games: breaking, surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing. Moreover, it will mark the first Olympics that won’t hold its opening ceremony in a stadium. Over 10,500 athletes will instead float down the heart of the city on the River Seine. The production will showcase a four-mile-long flotilla comprised of 100 boats, which will pass the Austerlitz Bridge, the Jardin des Plantes and will conclude in front of the Trocadéro. The opening ceremony in the “City of Love” will include athletes from 206 different countries competing in 32 sports.

This is the first regularly-scheduled summer olympics since 2016. The 2020 Tokyo games were postponed to 2021 due to COVID.

This is IMAX’s Olympics debut. Tickets have not yet been released and ticket prices are not yet known.
