๐Ÿฉ National Donut Day: What Your Doughnut Order Says About Who You Really Are

Jun 5, 2026, 9:40 AM | Updated: 9:41 am

Look, we’re not going to pretend you need a reason to eat a donut. But just in case your self-control is stronger than ours, today โ€” National Donut Day โ€” is literally the most legitimate excuse on the calendar. So go ahead and grab one (or a Dozen). We’ll wait.

But before you do, let’s talk about something more important than the donut itself: what your choice of donut says about you as a human being. Because apparently, your frosting preference is basically a personality test now. And honestly? It tracks.

A Little History (Because Donuts Deserve Respect)

Before we get into your deep psychological profile, let’s give credit where it’s due. National Donut Day, celebrated in the United States and in some other countries, falls on the first Friday of June each year, succeeding the donut event created by The Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938.

And no, it wasn’t just created so Krispy Kreme could hand out free glazed rings โ€” though that’s a solid bonus. In 1938, The Salvation Army in Chicago celebrated the very first National Donut Day, honoring their “Donut Lassies” who traveled overseas to provide emotional and spiritual support and other services to troops on the front lines in France. The Lassies also provided fresh donuts and hot coffee to soldiers fighting in the trenches in order to raise their spirits and thank them for their service.

That’s right โ€” donuts have literally been a morale booster since World War I. These brave volunteers would even use war helmets as a utensil to fry up seven donuts at a time. If that doesn’t make you feel something, we don’t know what will.

Oh, and in case you’re curious about the hole in the middle โ€” legend has it that American sailor Hanson Gregory, frustrated by undercooked centers in his donut cakes, used a tin pepper box to punch out the middle while aboard a steamship in 1847 โ€” giving birth to the ring-shaped donut we know and love. A man of solutions. Respect.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

Over half of Americans claim to love donuts, and every year an estimated 10 billion donuts are sold in the United States. Ten. Billion. That’s not a snack. That’s a lifestyle.

The most requested flavor is the simple and original Glazed Donut, followed by Boston Cream and Jelly Filled. Which means most of us are, statistically, creatures of habit. And that brings us to the good stuff.

Personality Profile: What Your Doughnut Choice Says About You

According to psychologist Jo Hemmings, as reported by the NY Post โ€” because yes, this is a real thing that real people studied.

Psychologist Jo Hemmings says the type of donut you choose can say a whole lot more about your personality than you might think. So go ahead โ€” find your flavor and feel personally called out.

๐Ÿฉ Classic Glazed โ€” Traditionalist, Empathetic, Patient

You know exactly what you want and you’re not apologizing for it. You are a traditionalist. You know what you like in life and have an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” attitude. A little cautious by nature, you are also modest and self-disciplined. You rank highly on the empathy scale, as you can always see life from someone else’s perspective. You’re sincere and authentic, preferring more often than not to relax in your own company than at a social occasion. And you’re a patient and loyal person, always ready to listen to other people’s concerns. Basically, you’re the most dependable person in every room. People love you for it โ€” even if you do order the same thing every. single. time.

๐Ÿซ Chocolate โ€” Fun, Social, Indulgent

You’ve clearly decided that life is too short for regrets and too good for plain frosting. You recognize that life is too short, and everyone should enjoy an indulgence. So, to combine two of your favorite things โ€” chocolate and a doughnut โ€” is bliss. You’re the person who shows up to the party and immediately makes it better. No further questions.

๐Ÿ“ Jam-Filled โ€” Logical, Reliable, Organized

You picked the donut with structure โ€” there’s literally a plan inside of it. You’re the friend who has a five-year roadmap, color-coded calendar, and never once forgets a birthday. You’re the one everyone texts when things go sideways, and somehow, you always have the answer. We salute you.

๐Ÿฎ Custard-Filled โ€” Warm-hearted, Sociable, Empathetic

You’re basically a human comfort blanket. Custard-Filled means you’re warm-hearted, sociable and empathetic โ€” you’re the person who texts “I’m here if you need anything” and means it. People gravitate toward you without knowing exactly why, and you’re completely fine with that. You probably also make an excellent lasagna. Just saying.

๐ŸŒˆ Sprinkles โ€” Adventurous, Generous, Child at Heart

A child at heart, you are adventurous, innovative and a lot of fun to be around. You’re a generous person โ€” both in spirit and sharing money and experiences with others โ€” as well as being confident and charismatic. Open-minded, you are a person who can improve anyone’s mood in a very short space of time. You also definitely took a photo of that donut before eating it. We’re not judging. We’re just saying.

๐Ÿฆ Iced Doughnut โ€” Kind-hearted, Diplomatic, Genuine

You love that soft crunch of icing on a doughnut. You’re genuine and kind-hearted and know that playing hard is just as important as working hard. You’re a diplomatic person, who is able to navigate their way through problems in life with good cheer and optimism. You’re the glue of the friend group and honestly, everyone knows it โ€” including you.

๐Ÿฉ Full Doughnut โ€” Adventurous, Trustworthy, Determined

No hole, no problem. You are adventurous and full of good humor. Determined and trustworthy, you tend to be unflappable in a crisis. Considerate of others, you make a good friend and partner. You’re basically the person everyone wants on their team when things get complicated. Pick them.

๐Ÿฉ Original Glazed โ€” Traditionalist, Modest, Cautious

Yes, this is different from Classic Glazed โ€” and yes, the distinction matters to you, which says everything. You are quietly confident, don’t need the spotlight, and have probably been loyal to the same coffee order since 2009. There’s zero wrong with that.

๐Ÿฎ Custard Doughnut โ€” Guarded, Kind, Resilient

You don’t let just anyone in, but when you do, they’re lucky to be there. You’ve been through some things, learned from them, and came out softer โ€” not harder. That’s actually a rare and admirable trait. Also, custard is genuinely underrated and so are you.

Go Get Your Free Donut

So whether you’re a sprinkles-and-chaos kind of person or a devoted glazed loyalist, today is your day. Grab your donut, lean into your personality type, and remember โ€” National Donut Day is “a time to remember the lasting impact of a unique piece of history and to honor the heroic men and women who have served our country.”
