It seems like grasshoppers are everywhere in Colorado this year, buckle in, grasshopper sightings could last through winter according to the Butterfly Pavilion. An increase in grasshoppers has been seen throughout Colorado this summer. In Denver they wind up in your yard and on your plants. In rural areas of Colorado they are devastating crops and pastures.
We are seeing high numbers of grasshoppers this year because of the state’s weather pattern. The warm spring and hot summer created perfect conditions for grasshoppers. While grasshoppers were all over the place at the start of summer, it should start to slow down but they won’t be gone altogether. According to the Butterfly Pavilion the grasshoppers emerge in the early summer, while the height of grasshopper season peaks during mid-summer. Heading into the cooler months, like October and November, there should be a decrease in grasshoppers, however there may still be some through winter!! even the early Spring.
They are a vital part of food webs as they are both prey and consumers. They help break down dead plants and clippings, which speeds up nutrient recycling and energy flow. They also help control plant overgrowth by creating a balance between different plant species…
ALL THAT SOUNDS GREAT!…BUT MAN OUR THEY ANNOYING!!!..ESPECALLY ON THE GOLF COURSE!!
