What’s open and closed on Juneteenth? What you need to know.
Though only officially recognized as a federal holiday over the last few years, Juneteenth has been celebrated by Black Americans since the 1800s, the National Museum of African American History and Culture said on its website.
Juneteenth, which takes place June 19, marks the freedom of enslaved people in Texas, which was declared two-and-a-half years after Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 which states, that “all persons held as slaves” in states that were part of the Confederacy “are, and henceforward shall be free.”
Currently Juneteenth is also a Colorado state holiday.
Here’s what we know that is open or closed on Juneteenth.
Closed
- Post Offices and no mail delivery.
- Banks and Credit Unions – Although ATM’s and online banking remain available.
- All federal, state, county & most city government offices.
- Stock markets
- Federal and state courts.
- Library’s
Open
Generally, most businesses and restaurants will remain open though some may have alternate hours.
- Costco and Sam’s Club are open.
- UPS and FedEx store locations are open. Pickup and delivery are available.
Additionally, street parking throughout the city of Denver will be free on Wednesday for the holiday.
National Parks will extend their “free days” to include Juneteenth this year.
Visitors can visit any national park for free. Officials say the free day is for people to enjoy the beauty and history of our country.
