The lightning strike happened in August, and the male Eagle died. The female has since returned to what’s left of the nest and tree. Wildlife experts have been watching this pair of Eagles for over a decade. Experts say the 2 Eagles were left unconscious after being next to the nest when it was struck by lightning. The male Eagle did not recover.

The Eagles oddly enough were in this tree because it is one of the last standing cottonwood trees in the area. The Eagles need the heavier tree for their weight and the weight of their nests. Development keeps pushing the birds out. They are on one of the last trees around and Boulder County just exterminated nine acres of prairie dogs that the Eagles depended on for food.
These 2 Eagles have had heartache before. They have lost chicks in the past, they have been pushed out of multiple nests for development and now this. I found it heartbreaking to see the video of the beautiful birds become motionless after the lightning strike.
“It was really pretty jarring. That’s an understatement,” said Dana Bove, chief researcher for Front Range Eagle Studies.
