Are you holding a grudge? Feel that you owe someone an apology? Research shows that for those of us unable to forgive, it has a negative impact on our own mental health.
Forgiveness Day is celebrated today, June 26. This day is distinct from Global Forgiveness Day, which falls on July 7 and is derived from Forgiveness Day.
In 1994, The Christian Embassy of Christ’s Ambassadors established this day in accordance with Christian teachings on forgiveness — emphasizing the importance of forgiving those who wrong us. Forgiveness holds different meanings for different individuals, and today is an opportunity to let go of past grievances and forgive those who have hurt us.
The concept of forgiveness dates back thousands of years, with references found in various religious texts. While it may seem challenging, forgiveness is essentially about releasing anger, pain and the desire for revenge. Different religions, from the Bible to the Quran, share stories and teachings on forgiveness and its impact on our lives. The act of forgiveness is depicted in various religious traditions, including Buddhism, Hinduism, and Judaism.
Recent research has explored the psychological and physical benefits of forgiveness, with studies showing that forgiveness can reduce stress, anger, depression, and anxiety. Forgiveness is also associated with improved social relationships, marital quality, and physical health, such as lower blood pressure and better cardiovascular health. Dr. Frederic Luskin, Director of the Stanford University Forgiveness Project, conducted research on forgiveness and found that forgiveness training can significantly reduce feelings of hurt and resentment. Through forgiveness, individuals can heal and move forward from past pain.
Is there someone in your life you would like to make amends with?
Do you want to give forgiveness to someone?
Or get forgiveness from someone?
Today is the day to try to make it happen.
