Thunderstorms delay over 700 flights at Denver’s airport.

A quick round of thunderstorms moved through the Denver metro area this afternoon creating delays and some cancellations at Denver International Airport, DIA. According to Flight Aware as of 7:00 p.m. there were 761 delays and 55 cancellations. DIA’s two largest carries bore the brunt of the issues with Southwest showing 276 delays and United with 225. Northern areas of the front range should be on the watch for the strongest storms, late Friday. Additionally, these areas have been upgraded to a Slight risk for severe weather (level 2 of 5 on the danger scale), and will be under Severe Thunderstorm Watches until 9 p.m. The biggest threats will be ping-pong to egg-sized hail, heavy downpours, winds gusting up to 70 mph, lots of lightning/thunder and even a few possible tornadoes.
