The Last Chapter: Tattered Cover bookstores sold to competitor.
Barnes & Noble, one of the country’s largest booksellers, is planning to buy Tattered Cover for more than $1.8 million, according to court filings Monday. Tattered Cover filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2023.
Following the completion of the sale, the era of the indie bookstore will come to a close, but the Colorado institution will retain its name as per the agreement. Barnes & Noble is anticipated to maintain the operation of all Tattered Cover’s stores.
Over the years many authors and celebrities have visited Tattered Cover for book signings or just to peruse the selection of books.
Tattered Cover has locations in Aurora, Littleton, Denver’s Union Station, and Colfax Avenue. It also licenses its name to shops at Denver International Airport.
