Southwest Airlines will soon be assigning seats, thus changing their 50 year history. Southwest Airlines says after studying the way passengers travel and preferences they will now assign seats and allow passengers who want more legroom to purchase premium seats.
Southwest Airlines said,
“The research is clear and indicates that 80% of Southwest customers, and 86% of potential customers, prefer an assigned seat.”
Many see the move as a way for the airline to also make additional revenue. Southwest reported that their second-quarter profit fell 46% from a year earlier, to $367 million, and attributed it to higher costs for labor, fuel and other expenses.
Another change, Southwest said for the first time that they will begin offering red-eye flights.
Southwest has not given a start date for seat assignments and changes and mentioned no change to their baggage policy.
