Our hearts break for Mariah Carey and her family

Mariah Carey’s mother Patricia and sister Alison died on the same day. Mariah Carey expressed her heartbreak over the loss of her mother and sister. “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” said in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE. “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed,” adds Mariah. “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Patricia was 87 and a former opera singer and vocal coach. Mariah Carey detailed her complicated relationship with her mother in her memoir. Mariah spoke of the deep love she had for her mother despite their challenges.

Mariah’s sister Alison had been receiving hospice care before her death. She also had a complicated relationship with Mariah. Alison sued Mariah for $1.2m following the release of Mariah’s memoir.

My heart breaks for Mariah. It has to be so hard to lose them both no matter what their relationships were like she always talked about how much she still loved them.
