Drivers in Colorado Springs are facing consequences for not renewing or registering their vehicles, with the Colorado State Patrol warning that expired tags can lead to fines of up to $500.
The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) struggles to track reasons for non-renewal, but emphasizes the importance of registration fees in funding infrastructure.
Law enforcement, despite staffing challenges, maintains that all violations are enforced equally, including expired tags. Even if drivers receive a warning, they may still incur late fees and other penalties from the DMV.
Failure to renew registration within 13 months can lead to registration cancellation. Vehicle registration fees contribute to funding road, bridge, and school repairs.
Many cases of expired tags are due to forgetting to affix the new sticker to license plates. (That was what happened to me but luckily I was able to go to a kiosk same day and renew it)
It is crucial for drivers to ensure their vehicles are properly registered to avoid legal and financial repercussions.
