It’s been a big year for Lauren Alaina. She released a new single, “Road Less Traveled,” co-written with pop star Meghan Trainor, off her 2015 self-titled EP and is currently filming a movie of the same name. She recently chatted with Taste of Country’s Billy Dukes about the single, her meeting with Dolly Parton and more.

Alaina has been shooting the lead role in her first film, shaped around the single, inspired by a dark period in her life where she battled bulimia while dealing with her parents’ divorce and her father’s alcoholism. The singer admits she’s never professionally acted before, though she says she does act “every day of my life, unprofessionally.” Road Less Traveled is due out in January of 2017.

She shares her first onscreen lip-lock in the film. “It was a little nerve-wracking to kiss onscreen,” she admits. “It’s so uncomfortable because so many people are watching and you’ve just met the person.”
