Did you see the Sundog yesterday? WOW! I was driving home and saw the most beautiful double rainbow and it was circling the sun! I have never seen that before, so I had to pull over and get some pics. There is a name for the phenomenon. It’s called a Parhelion or Sun Dog. A bright spot in the sky appearing on either side of the sun, formed by refraction of sunlight through ice crystals high in the earth’s atmosphere.
Why are they called Sundogs? According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the name originates from Greek mythology, where the bright spots appearing on either side of the sun were thought to be the dogs of Zeus, the sky god, walking across the sky, essentially acting as “companions” to the sun; hence, “sun dogs.”
