APRIL audio tip - recorded from KOSI 101

Whether you’re running a marathon or simply taking a stroll in the park with friends, it’s important to have a good sports shoe. But that doesn’t mean all the hype you hear from the shoe manufacturers is true.

In general:

• If you participate in the same sport 2 to 3 times a week (such as running), you may want to invest in a shoe specifically made for that sport.
• Cross trainers are usually sufficient for activities with side-to-side movement and stop-and-go actions.
• Cleats are best for sports like soccer or softball.

There’s mixed information from experts on walking shoes: Some say you should pick a shoe specifically for walking. Others say a running shoe is just fine.

Price Does Matter:

An $80 athletic shoe really is going to be better than one that costs $15. Don’t go overboard, though. You likely are paying a premium if you choose a shoe that is associated with a celebrity or is “fashionable.”

When to Replace Your Sports Shoes:

• If the sole is worn out.
• If the shoe feels uncomfortable or less supportive.
• Every 350-550 miles for running shoes (that’s every 8 to12 months if you run 10 miles a week).
• Cross trainers and other sport-specific shoes every 60 to 70 hours of activity.

Shopping for the Right Athletic Shoes:

• Shop at stores that offer a wide variety of choices.
• Try on shoes at the end of the day or after a workout when your feet are at their largest.
• Bring your own workout socks (and orthotics, if applicable).
• Comfort is key; try on different styles and brands to find the one that fits best.
• Be sure to walk around the store for 5 to 10 minutes and make sure the shoe continues to be comfortable. There is no “breaking in” period for athletic shoes.
