Debbie Wiggins - Candy Cane Cookie

My all-time favorite cookie. My grandma made them, my mom made them, and now I make them with my children. It simply wouldn't be Christmas without this cookie.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup powdered sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon red food coloring 

Directions:
Topping: Crushed peppermint candy mixed with granulated sugar Mix thoroughly butter, shortening, powdered sugar, egg, and extracts. Blend in flour and salt. Divide dough in half. Put red food coloring in one half of the batter. Shape about one tablespoon of each color into a 5-inch rope and twist together to form a cane. Place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 9 minutes. After baking, immediately sprinkle on topping. Yields about 30 cookies. Enjoy!!!
